Syria has taken a historic step by granting citizenship to Kurdish minorities across the country, including those previously considered stateless. This decision comes in the wake of recent government gains against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northern regions, as the Syrian administration works to consolidate control over previously contested territories.

The decree, issued by the Syrian Ministry of Interior under Interior Minister Anas Khattab, mandates that all Kurds residing in Syria are eligible for citizenship. Authorities have been instructed to implement the decree immediately, with official procedures and guidelines to be rolled out by February 5. This move is aimed at providing legal recognition and equal rights to a community that has historically faced bureaucratic and social challenges.

In addition to granting citizenship, the Syrian government has emphasized the preservation of Kurdish language and culture. The decree allows for Kurdish language education in both public and private schools within Kurdish-majority areas. Moreover, March 21 has been designated as the official date for the Nowruz festival, the traditional spring celebration, ensuring recognition of Kurdish cultural practices at the national level.

The timing of this decree aligns with broader efforts to stabilize Syria after years of conflict. By formally recognizing the rights of Kurdish residents, the government seeks to promote national unity while addressing long-standing grievances. It also reflects a strategic approach to integrate diverse communities into the national framework as the state strengthens governance in northern territories.

In parallel, Syrian leadership has been engaging in diplomatic discussions with international partners, ensuring that ongoing reforms and stabilization efforts are supported while maintaining security and sovereignty. Observers note that the citizenship decree represents not only a humanitarian gesture but also a calculated step to foster political and social cohesion in a region historically affected by conflict and fragmentation.

This landmark decree signifies a meaningful shift in Syria’s approach toward minority rights and inclusion, marking a new chapter for Kurdish communities in the country.
