The United States has paused its airstrike campaign against Iran, offering a temporary break in a conflict approaching its fifth month. The halt in military operations has fueled hopes for renewed diplomatic negotiations, while reports suggest concerns over dwindling US defensive weapon stockpiles are influencing Washington’s strategy.
According to US media reports, no American airstrikes were carried out against Iran overnight on Sunday. CNN, citing an unnamed Pentagon source, reported that offensive operations are currently “on hold,” despite previous warnings from US President Donald Trump that Iran could face strikes at a “much higher level.”
The New York Times reported that plans to expand the military campaign were delayed partly due to concerns over shrinking supplies of Patriot missile interceptors and other key defensive munitions. Officials also reportedly warned that a broader conflict could further destabilize the Middle East and disrupt the global economy.
The conflict, which initially intensified around the strategic Strait of Hormuz, has since expanded to include attacks on US military bases, regional shipping routes, and Gulf allies. The prolonged fighting has complicated diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.
Reports indicate that Vice President JD Vance and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine expressed concerns about further escalation during a White House meeting. While military options remain available, officials reportedly cautioned President Trump about the potential consequences of widening the conflict.
In an interview with France’s LCI News, President Trump said he remained prepared to resume a large-scale military campaign if Iran failed to meet US demands.
“If we don’t get 100% of what we want, absolutely,” Trump said when asked whether he would restart full-scale military operations.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump said discussions with Iran were continuing and suggested negotiations were becoming more serious. However, he maintained that Tehran faces a choice between reaching an agreement or confronting significantly intensified military action.
The conflict, which Trump previously predicted would last only four to five weeks, is now nearing its fifth month. The prolonged military engagement has also become a domestic political issue as the United States approaches its November midterm elections.
According to Axios, the Pentagon presented President Trump with plans for another night of airstrikes, but he reportedly declined to authorize the operation in favor of pursuing diplomatic talks.
Meanwhile, US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that its naval blockade targeting Iran remains fully operational. The command stated that multiple commercial vessels attempting to breach the blockade had been redirected, boarded, or disabled after failing to comply with warnings.
CENTCOM also announced that verification operations were conducted aboard a Comoros-flagged tanker in the Arabian Sea, while another vessel flying the Mozambique flag was disabled in the Gulf of Oman after allegedly attempting to violate the blockade repeatedly.
The pause in US air operations may provide a window for diplomacy, but military officials continue to monitor developments as tensions remain high across the region.
