A tragic bus accident near Madinah, Saudi Arabia, has claimed the lives of 45 Indian Umrah pilgrims, mostly from Hyderabad, while one survivor fights for life in hospital. The disaster occurred in the early hours of Monday, 17 November 2025, around 1:30 AM IST, when the pilgrims’ bus collided with a diesel tanker near Mufrihat while returning from Makkah to Madinah after completing their Umrah rituals.


Details of the Accident

The Hyderabad-based group had departed the city on November 9 and were traveling with Al Meena and Al Mecca Travels, Nampally. Rescue teams reported that the bus was completely gutted, making the identification of victims extremely challenging.

Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar confirmed:

“Forty-five people have died, and there is only one survivor, who is currently in hospital.”

The sole survivor, Mohd Abdul Shoiab, 24, is receiving medical care in Saudi Arabia.


Indian Mission Steps in for Relief Efforts

The Indian Consulate in Jeddah has established a 24×7 control room to assist families of the victims. A toll-free helpline, 8002440003, is operational for timely updates and support.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, currently in Russia, expressed his condolences and assured support, stating:

“Our embassy in Riyadh and consulate in Jeddah are giving full support to Indian nationals and families affected by this accident.”

Indian volunteers have also been actively assisting at hospitals, working alongside the Embassy, Consulate, Saudi Hajj and Umrah Ministry, and local authorities. Coordination with the Telangana government is underway to provide support to families back home.

The tragedy has shocked the Indian community worldwide, with tributes pouring in for the victims. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash and ensure the safety and well-being of pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia.
