A powerful Iran-backed Iraqi armed group has warned its fighters to prepare for a potential long conflict if the United States launches military strikes against Iran, highlighting rising tensions across the Middle East.
The militia Kataeb Hezbollah, which operates in Iraq, issued a statement urging fighters to prepare for a “long war of attrition” as regional tensions increase and the United States expands its military presence near Iran.
According to the group, growing American military deployments and threats indicate a dangerous escalation that could trigger a wider regional conflict.
A commander within the militia told AFP that the group considers Iran a key strategic ally. He warned that any attack on Iran would directly threaten their interests and could lead to intervention by armed factions in the region.
“If Iran is attacked, it will affect us directly,” the commander said, adding that armed groups may respond more forcefully than in previous conflicts.
The warning comes amid concerns about a potential confrontation between United States and Iran, particularly if negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program collapse.
Iran-aligned militias form part of the so-called “axis of resistance,” a network that includes Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza Strip, and the Houthis in Yemen.
Meanwhile, the United States has increased its military presence in the region. Donald Trump, the U.S. president, recently deployed warships and fighter jets near Iran while warning of possible strikes if diplomatic talks fail.
Despite the rising tensions, negotiations between the United States and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program continue. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the latest round of discussions had made “very good progress,” leaving open the possibility of a diplomatic solution.
Analysts warn that if diplomacy collapses, the conflict could quickly spread across the region.
