Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has defended a memorandum of understanding with the United States, describing it as the most practical option for ending the prolonged uncertainty surrounding the conflict.
Speaking in remarks published by Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, Pezeshkian said the country must move beyond its current state of “neither war nor peace.” He explained that Iran’s Supreme National Security Council considers the memorandum the best available framework for protecting the country’s dignity, security and national interests.
The Iranian president also rejected claims that the agreement represents a surrender to Washington. He maintained that Tehran’s approach remains consistent with policies established by Iran’s Supreme Leader.
Deadline passes without major breakthrough
The memorandum, signed by US President Donald Trump in June, established a 60-day period for efforts to end the conflict and reach a broader understanding concerning Iran’s nuclear programme.
However, that deadline has now passed without a final settlement. Iran and the United States reportedly remain divided over several important issues, particularly the future of the Strait of Hormuz.
The strategic waterway is essential to international shipping and global energy supplies. Disagreement over its reopening and management continues to prevent meaningful progress toward a lasting settlement.
Economic uncertainty remains a concern
Pezeshkian also highlighted the economic consequences of the unresolved conflict. He said prolonged uncertainty discourages investors because businesses and financial institutions generally avoid countries facing serious security risks.
Iran’s economy has come under increasing pressure during nearly six months of conflict with the United States and Israel. International sanctions and a naval blockade have created additional difficulties for trade, investment and oil exports.
The president’s remarks suggest that parts of Iran’s political leadership view diplomacy as necessary for reducing economic pressure and restoring stability. However, significant differences between Washington and Tehran remain unresolved.
Whether the memorandum can lead to renewed negotiations will largely depend on both sides’ willingness to compromise on Iran’s nuclear activities, maritime security and navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
