Qatar Denies Holding Iranian Pilots as Tehran Demands Investigation

Qatar has rejected Iran’s allegation that three Iranian military pilots are being held in the Gulf country, creating a new diplomatic dispute between Doha and Tehran over the fate of aircrew involved in a combat mission in March.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said the Iranian aircraft had entered Qatari airspace and that their pilots failed to respond to attempts to establish communication. Qatari authorities said they subsequently conducted a search-and-rescue operation and recovered the remains of one pilot.

According to Doha, Iran was contacted to coordinate the return of the remains and was invited to review information concerning the incident. Qatar said Tehran had not yet responded to that invitation.

Iran Claims Three Pilots Were Captured Alive

Iran has presented a different account of the incident.

Iranian state media cited a senior military official as saying that three pilots ejected from their aircraft during a combat mission and were captured alive by Qatari forces.

The mission reportedly targeted a military installation in Qatar during Iran’s response to attacks launched by the United States and Israel in February.

Iran has not publicly presented independent evidence confirming that the three pilots remain alive or are being detained by Qatar. Doha has categorically denied holding them.

The conflicting statements mean that the location and condition of the missing pilots remain unclear.

Tehran Demands Access for Investigation Team

Mohammad Baqerzadeh, commander of the Committee for the Search for Missing Persons of Iran’s Armed Forces General Staff, called on Qatar to allow an Iranian fact-finding team to enter the country.

Baqerzadeh said Iranian military and investigative officials had been waiting for months to examine the circumstances surrounding the missing pilots.

He accused Qatar of repeatedly delaying the proposed investigation and preventing the pilots’ return. Qatar has rejected the central allegation that the pilots are in its custody.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also called on Doha to permit Iranian specialists to investigate the case instead of simply denying that any pilots had been detained.

Red Cross Asked to Follow Up on Missing Pilots

Iranian officials have requested assistance from the International Committee of the Red Cross to determine what happened to the pilots.

The organisation may be asked to help establish their status, facilitate communication between the two countries or support the return of any remains.

However, no independently verified findings confirming the pilots’ location have been made public.

Qatar maintains that it recovered the remains of only one pilot and has no other Iranian pilots in detention.

Qatar Defends Its Response to Airspace Violation

Qatar said it took defensive measures after the Iranian aircraft entered its airspace and did not respond to repeated communication attempts.

Doha considers the incident a violation of its sovereignty and maintains that its actions were taken to protect Qatari territory.

The dispute dates back to the wider regional conflict that began after the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28. Tehran responded by striking targets in Israel and US military facilities located across the Gulf.

These exchanges expanded the conflict beyond Iran and Israel, placing Gulf countries hosting American military facilities in a particularly sensitive position.

Conflicting Claims Remain Unresolved

The case has now developed into a dispute involving two conflicting accounts.

Iran says three pilots survived after ejecting from their aircraft and were detained by Qatari forces. Qatar says it is not holding any pilots and only recovered the remains of one individual during its search operation.

The absence of publicly available independent evidence makes it difficult to confirm either side’s complete version of events.

Further cooperation, access for neutral investigators or involvement from the International Committee of the Red Cross could help clarify what happened.

Until such an investigation takes place, the fate of the three Iranian pilots will remain disputed and could add further strain to relations between Qatar and Iran during a period of heightened regional tension.
