Russia has said that India remains free to purchase oil from any supplier, responding to claims by former US President Donald Trump that New Delhi had agreed to stop buying Russian crude.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that India has always sourced oil from multiple countries and that there is “nothing new” in this position. He added that Russia has not received any official communication from India indicating a halt in Russian oil imports.
Trump recently suggested that India would reduce or stop buying Russian oil as part of a broader understanding with the United States. However, Russian officials dismissed the claim, stressing that India independently determines its energy policy based on national interests.
India has significantly increased imports of discounted Russian oil since the Ukraine conflict began, while continuing to buy energy from the Middle East, the US and other suppliers. Analysts say New Delhi is unlikely to make abrupt changes under external pressure.
The statement from Moscow highlights ongoing geopolitical tensions around global energy trade, as major powers seek to influence oil flows amid sanctions and shifting alliances.
