Drone strike targets Sudanese army base in Sinja amid RSF and SAF conflict

In a significant escalation of Sudan’s ongoing civil conflict, a drone attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) reportedly killed 27 people at a Sudanese army base in the southeastern city of Sinja. Local sources indicate that the strike targeted not only military leaders but also security personnel and civilians accompanying them.

The attack occurred as Sudan’s government, aligned with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), announced plans to return to the capital, Khartoum, three years after relocating its base of operations to Port Sudan. Sinja, the capital of Sennar state, is strategically located along a key route to Khartoum and houses the headquarters of the SAF’s 17th Infantry Division, which appeared to be the primary target of the drone strike.

While exact casualty figures remain uncertain, reports suggest that between 13 and 73 people were wounded. Among those present during the attack was Qamar al-Din Fadl al-Mawla, the governor of Sudan’s White Nile state, who survived the incident, though two colleagues reportedly lost their lives.

Salah Adam Abdullah, spokesperson for the Sennar state government, stated that the army’s anti-aircraft defenses intercepted some of the drone activity. However, RSF adviser Al-Basha Tibiq indicated the strike was intended as a warning to Sudanese military leaders, signaling continued hostilities in the ongoing civil war, which has gripped the country since April 2023.

The civil war has left Khartoum State as a major battleground, with both RSF and SAF vying for control. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely as violence persists across several regions.
