General Sahir Shamshad Mirza farewell meeting with COAS Field Marshal Asim Munir at GHQ Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI – November 26:
Outgoing Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad Mirza paid a farewell visit to Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir at the General Headquarters (GHQ) on Tuesday, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

COAS Praises Distinguished Service

During the meeting, Field Marshal Asim Munir commended General Mirza for his exemplary leadership, strategic vision, and outstanding service to the Pakistan Armed Forces. The army chief acknowledged the CJCSC’s crucial role in enhancing tri-services coordination, improving joint operational readiness, and advancing key national security objectives.

ISPR said the COAS also highlighted General Mirza’s efforts in strengthening regional stability, enhancing military diplomacy, and broadening Pakistan’s defence ties with friendly nations.Upon arrival at GHQ, General Mirza laid a floral wreath at Yadgar-e-Shuhada and was presented a guard of honour by a smartly turned-out contingent of the Pakistan Army. General Mirza expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout his career.

Visit to Air Headquarters

Separately, General Mirza also visited Air Headquarters in Islamabad, where he was received by Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu.

The air chief lauded the outgoing CJCSC for his remarkable contributions to national defence and for playing a leading role in promoting synergy among the three services. He reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to continuing close cooperation to eliminate terrorism and strengthen national security.

General Mirza expressed satisfaction with the high level of combat readiness achieved by the PAF and appreciated its modernisation and upgradation initiatives. He praised the professionalism and dedication of PAF personnel in safeguarding Pakistan’s airspace and acknowledged the importance of seamless inter-service coordination.

Abolition of CJCSC Office

Earlier in November, the national security framework underwent major restructuring through an amendment to Article 243 of the Constitution and changes in the laws governing the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The reforms abolished the office of the CJCSC — a position established nearly five decades ago to ensure joint service representation at the strategic level.

The dissolution of the post, effective November 27, marks the end of an era of formalized tri-service representation in defence-related decision making.
